I have a dilemma. I have to write a short story for my fiction class. It's due in a week. It has to be 5 pages long.
On whatever I want.
I have NO idea what to write it about.
Well, that's not entirely true. I have a few ideas, but they all seem pretty lame. Here are some of my choices.
1. Tell the story about the night Spiderman and I met. (but longer and in more detail than the one I posted here)
2. Tell about one of the MANY horrible blind dates I went on before meeting Spiderman.
3. Tell one of my work stories about my strange patients.
4. A completely made up story inspired/suggested by one of you.
I could take one of my real stories and polish them up some, embellish if I have to to make it interesting. OR I could make something completely up. I just don't know.
Also, here's the kicker.
We have to read these aloud to the class.
I think that is what is giving me writer's block. The pressure to be interesting to a group of 25 people that I have never met before. I don't really know my audience. What if my story completely sucks. What if the person who goes before me is a completely fabulous, eloquent, profound writer and here I go talking about my lame blind date.
I'm sure whatever I write will be okay, but I can't help worrying a little bit. This is why I'm taking the class, after all. I want to be a better writer. I want to learn ways to do this. I want to get over my fears and hang ups. It's just scary.
So does anyone have any suggestions?

What about something interesting about your grandparents? And of course you can spice it up.
Like my grandparents - my grammy picked my papa out of the yearbook. Then when they went on their blind date my papa told my grammy I'm going to marry you. Of course my grammy for 6mos told him he was crazy then gave in finally and they got married. Soon after they were married and first child was born he left for WW II because he flew small engine planes. And my grammy was so angry with him. Their love story goes on and on, I could write all the stories my grammy told me over years when they both were alive.
Think about it using grandparents are easy because no one knows them. And don't forget you can always fill in the blanks and make it spicy like I said before.

Go to Starbucks or somewhere with good people watching. There's bound to be someone on a cell. Listen to their half of the conversation and create a story around it.
Or, I was at the mall Monday and a woman was sitting on a bench crying (into her cell) and I wondered what could have happened. Create a story around that.

I have a scathingly brilliant idea! Amy should be your muse! Her grandparents are far more interesting than yours and it would make a great story!

Hmm? I don't know if I'd be much help. I love to read, but writing is really not my thing. As evidenced by my pathetic attempt at a blog.
I'm going out on a limb here and suggesting that instead of telling stories of true events for your FICTION writing class, you should submit something...um....fictional. Or is that just crazy?
Okay Captain Obvious....the class is actually CREATIVE WRITING. Our teacher never said it had to be a fictional story. Just that he wanted a story.
You could always write about what is going on in my life!! I will even let you interview me!!1
Maybe it'd be a little lesss intimidating to read a story that was fiction to strangers rather than reading something true.
