Social Butterflies

Okay all you social butterflies, I have a dilemma. This past weekend was busy for me. On Saturday I went to the wedding of a friend of my husband's (for the sake of this blog my husband wants to be referred to as Spiderman). The only people I knew well there were of course Spiderman, the bride and groom, and my brother and sister-in-law. Spiderman knew several people as they are all part of his Fantasy Baseball league. He spent all night forming the ultimate Fantasy Team, leaving me to fend for myself. For some reason I get very shy in situations like this. Normally, I have no problem talking to complete strangers (I do this every day with my patients, and also Spiderman laughs at me because I'll talk to complete strangers in the grocery store...video store...etc). I sat at our table with my sister-in-law listening to the other women talk having NO idea what to say to them. I searched my brain for things to say. Most of them were part of the "mommy club" and unfortunately I have nothing to contribute there. I understand that having children is life changing and all consuming. (I will probably be the worst one someday) I do not mean this in a catty way, but it can be very isolating sometimes, at my age, not belonging to that club. Anyway....I got off track....what do you talk to complete strangers about in these situations? Where everyone knows each other and you don't. I feel a little like I held my sister-in-law hostage. (Jen I apologize, especially since I got kind of crabby at the end of the night!)
Anyway....I was looking through my camera and noticed that the whole night I only took one picture.
I wonder what this says about me. Every wedding I go to I take a picture of the cake.
mmmm....cake....

Pay it Forward

I woke up with a killer migraine for the second morning in a row ( thank you fabulous weather), so this will be brief. I was reading the blog Pancakes and Frenchfries the other day, and she is doing a Pay it Forward giveaway with her blog. I really liked the idea and started to think of ways I could pay it forward. My blog is so new, i don't think enough people are reading (sorry mom) to use it. Instead I want to do it in real life. I'm going to sign up for the Avon Breast Cancer walk in Chicago. ( I was already thinking about it...but this will give me more incentive) I figure this will be Paying it Forward on a larger scale. You can follow me as I start training (exercise, augh!) and I'll try to post the actual event.

25 Things

A rite of passage for bloggers is to post 100 things. A list compiled of random things about that blogger. I'm going to keep adding to this list as I think of them and hopefully I'll get to 100.

1. I LOVE Target. If I don't go at least once a week they start to worry about me.
2. I'm a total pen whore, as I think most Healthcare professionals are. I Love most office supplies.
3. I'm hugely addicted to my IPod. I have 1,124 songs in my library. Is that too many?
4. Cannot whistle or roll my tongue. Sadly, no.
5. I took 10 years of piano lessons.
6. Girl Scout dropout due to #5.
7. My husband and I met as a set-up.
8. I am DEATHLY afraid of snakes. Even pictures. This one totally freaked me out! I'm almost afraid to drive now.
9. I consider chocolate a food group.
10. HATE exercising and think that all the walking I do at work every day should count.
11. My cat Tim is named after a character in Monty Python's Holy Grail.

I Love My Job....

I really don't want this blog to be all about my job, but I had a heck of a day and I want to vent just a little. Let me share just a few of the high points from my day at the Chamber of Horrors.

*My assignment covered ICU (with an open heart) , NICU, the Cardiac Stepdown unit, and ER.
For 12 hours.
* I was paged every 3 minutes. All....Day....Long....
*I was called to give a "STAT" treatment to a 90 year old DNR who was asystole because his "sats were dropping". I forgot....it's prevents-all (proventil) ....even death!
*I intubated a 24 year old on her 2nd suicide attempt.
*Blue Babies.

Those are only the ones I want to talk about.
Fun times!

Goodwill

My mother-in-law had this hanging in her office. I really liked the message and I try to remember it daily.

Watch your thoughts,
They become your words.

Watch your words,
They become your actions.

Watch your actions,
They become your habits.

Watch your habits,
They become your character.

Watch your character,
It becomes your destiny.

Let your efforts rise above your excuses.

This weekend is the Goodwill Sale at Carson's. Not only can you give your old clothes to a great cause, but you can get a fab pair of "practically free" shoes out of the deal!

My Mailbox Tried to Kill Me

Okay, So maybe it might have been partially my own fault. I was getting ready to go to work this morning and had to mail a pile of 6 or 7 bills. At 5:30 in the morning I do NOT walk to my mailbox. Even though it's only at the end of my driveway. I'm lazy like that. I decided to drive. I pulled up to my mailbox and opened the door. At the same time that I was placing the bills in the box, my foot slid off the gas pedal. My arm got caught between the mailbox and the window of my car leaving me with a lovely pain shooting up my arm. Yep, that's gonna leave a bruise. And it's a beauty. I hope you can see it in the picture....

Helpful Medical Tip For The Day: When someone is drawing your blood, PLEASE don't scream directly in their ear the entire time. It only makes the process more painful for everyone involved.

My First Blog!

I am super excited about my first blog entry!! I have been reading my friend (or imaginary friend as I like to refer to her) Beth's blog for over a year now and thought it was time to try my very own.
As a child I was VERY into Mary Poppins. I mean I WAS Mary Poppins. I had an old hat of my mother's adorned with 2 smashed flowers and a clear plastic umbrella with large, red ladybugs. I would run around singing chim chimminy and tried to fly off my grandmother's balcony. (She liked to encourage my imagination. She was my "fairy" grandmother.) As an adult I still enjoy the scene with Mary pulling an assortment of items out of her neverendingly large purse. I can relate. I always have a large purse. I could never understand women with small purses. I need my stuff.
I'm not entirely sure what this blog is going to be about yet, but I figure that I'll write as much as I can and see where it leads...and who reads.
I'll just jump right in and tell a little about myself. I just turned 30 (groan) years old and my husband and I have been married for about a year and a half. This past summer we moved into a new house. We're working on the children part. That's an entirely different post. I work full time as a Respiratory Therapist and am going to school part time for secondary education. I'm trying to have as many different careers as possible before I die. I think I'll go to culinary school next.
Today in class I got back an 8 page paper I wrote on Raymond Carver. (I know, super exciting stuff) I got an A-. I think I'm going to put it on the fridge.
